“Not this day!”

The modern House of Lords is far from the ideal of propertied, responsible independence championed by Benjamin Disraeli
Cronyism has poisoned it with an ever-increasing swell of Lord Mandelsons and Lord Martins.  Still a force for good in our kingdom in spite of them, there is nevertheless a feeling of tragic inevitability that the day will come when this venerable but compromised institution must finally be pulled down by the wreckers.

But it is not this day.

An enormous debt of gratitude is owed to the honourable band of Conservative parliamentarians whose stand against the shabby stitch-up of Coalition Lords Reform may have saved our parliament's Upper Chamber today.

Conor BurnsJesse NormanAngie Bray and many more: thank you.
